Hi fellas, after viewing some good behind the scenes footage from fellow photographer around the world, really makes me feel great about myself. It allows me to take a peek at the thought process of the said shoot and how they actually go about doing it, in turn it gives me the confidence that i too, can acomplish great photographs after realizing that all it takes to have a good image is a well laid out plan.

Adorable babies!!

Adorable Babies from Shahrul on Vimeo.

Who doesn’t go awwwwww at the sight of cute adorable babies? I was priviledged enough to be able to photograph these kids. I knew their mothers well enough and I feel at ease being with the babies. Having come from a home that has babysat the kids of my relatives makes it easier for me to be comfortable with them.

This being my first ever photoshoot with babies and kids, I really didn’t know what to expect. All I do know is that its gonna take quite a while. And that it did. It reaaalllyyy took a while, all of us met as early as 10am, and the whole shoot wrapped up at about 6pm. With a little nap time and cranky time in between.

On with the show

On Location Outdoor Group Shots with off camera lighting, at CHIJ

picture 7 small

Hi fellas, lets continue on with the second installment of the on location group shots. This time we’ll be taking it outdoors.

First and foremost, what usually concerns me most for any photoshoot taking place outdoors is the weather. That can seriously affect the mood of the talent involved, and also the overall outcome of the picture.
You might also want to take note of the scheduled time the said shoot will be taking place, and also duration. Different shoots with different creative briefs will dictate the time where the shoot will take place. Shooting at noon is tough, not impossible but tough.

One must find ways of controlling the harsh sunlight. Mornings and late afternoons are a favourite among photographers, especially strobists.

Planning ahead while keeping these in mind could save you some trouble in the future.

Now lets move on shall we?

On Location Indoor Group Shots with off camera lighting, at CHIJ

picture 6 small

I was invited by my associate, Azmeer, whose wife teaches at CHIJ, Our Lady of the Nativity to conduct a shoot for her group of students. I was told that the initial photographer/s wasn’t allowed into the school because of the H1N1 Flu virus going around.

After the brief, it was then that I realised that the photographer/s, which was from the US, were specially flown in by Microsoft to take photos for a publication, of which that I’m still unaware of.

Long story short, I took on the job at a very short notice. Good thing there was the two of us, it’s useful to have an extra pair of hands around.

From the initial brief that I received, it was laid out so simple for me that it led me to think that all I need was my D300, SB800 and TTL sync chord. In fact, I even asked Azmeer (he was the liaison officer for the day) if I needed to bring my lightstand and light modifiers.

He thought for a while, and said…. “nah, think its gonna be a fast one”

Well…. we were both wrong!

I was lucky to have brought most of my lenses that I thought would be appropriate given the scenario that has been playing in my head, 1 lightstand, 1 umbrella and multiple strobe units.

Still with me? Lets get it on then

By now, you’ve probably met other photographers who seem to already have found their calling. Some would proudly say they’re a Wedding Photographer, or Portrait Photographer. And you’re wondering what does it take to follow a certain genre?

Well…. nothing. Do what interests you at that point of time, and then progress to something more challenging.

Ive just got a DSLR……. what do i shoot? (part 1 of 2)

clean up

What you shoot is entirely up to you, the world is your oyster. When you’re just starting out, the technicals of the photo shouldnt matter. Like me i was just too happy to finally own a DSLR to call my own, that i went out everywhere with my DSLR. Took it out for a spin, shot whatever i thought was interesting. The shots i took were really sub par, but that didnt stop me, my enthusiasm carried me on till today. I treated the initial triggerhappy days as a way of getting to know my camera. Understand photography more, understand what works, what doesnt.

Ive just got a DSLR……. what now?

When i started to get into photography as a serious hobby. I really did my homework. The path to being a good and well respected photographer starts waaaaaay before you hold a camera. I was up all night on forums, reading up articles on the web and of course going in and out of the library.
